Radical Neck Dissection Surgery

Advanced Surgical Treatment for Head & Neck Cancer Spread

What is Radical Neck Dissection?

Radical neck dissection is a major surgical procedure used to remove lymph nodes and surrounding tissues in the neck that are affected by cancer. It is typically performed when head and neck cancers (like oral, throat, laryngeal, or thyroid cancers) spread to the lymph nodes.

This procedure helps prevent further spread and recurrence of cancer and plays a vital role in cancer staging and long-term survival.

Why is it done?

Radical neck dissection is recommended when:

  • Cancer has spread to multiple lymph nodes in the neck
  • Enlarged or hard lymph nodes are detected during scans or physical examination
  • Cancer is not responding to chemotherapy or radiation
  • Part of comprehensive treatment for advanced head & neck cancer

Types of Neck Dissection

  1. Radical Neck Dissection (RND):
  2. Removes all lymph nodes in one side of the neck along with muscles, nerves, and veins that may be involved.

  3. Modified Radical Neck Dissection (MRND):
  4. Removes lymph nodes but preserves one or more non-lymphatic structures (like the spinal accessory nerve, internal jugular vein, or sternocleidomastoid muscle).

  5. Selective Neck Dissection (SND):
  6. Only specific lymph node groups are removed based on the cancer location.

What to Expect During Surgery

  • Performed under general anesthesia
  • Takes about 2–4 hours, depending on extent
  • Incision is usually made on the side of the neck
  • May be done alongside other head and neck cancer surgeries
  • Drain tubes may be placed to remove fluid buildup

Recovery after Surgery

  • Hospital stay: 2–5 days
  • Recovery time: 2–4 weeks
  • Physical therapy may be required for shoulder movement or neck stiffness
  • Regular follow-ups and imaging to monitor healing and cancer status

Potential Risks and Complications

  • Numbness or weakness in shoulder or neck
  • Swelling or fluid buildup (seroma)
  • Infection or bleeding
  • Scarring or changes in neck contour
  • Nerve injury (rare but possible)

Benefits of Radical Neck Dissection

  • Removes cancer-affected lymph nodes
  • Helps prevent recurrence or further spread
  • Provides accurate cancer staging
  • Can be life-saving in advanced disease
  • Often improves long-term survival rates
